Our Story

Where we've been...

TTCU began serving employees of the Tuscaloosa City school system in 1953.  Several leaders of the local education community met together to confirm their commitment for the creation of a teachers credit union in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  TTCU was officially chartered on April 1, 1953 and began operating from the trunk of a charter member's 1951 Buick.  The credit union later moved to its new location - a closet within the Tuscaloosa City School's Administrative Office located on the old Northington Army Hospital Campus!  After an upgrade to a standalone building there (which was once the operating room of the hospital), an office trailer was later added for additional space in the early 1980's.   


In 1987, we purchased the 6th Street property in Tuscaloosa which continues to serve as our main office today.  A location in Northport was opened in 2001 and operations began in the Taylorville community in 2002.  We acquired property in 2007 on Veteran's Memorial Parkway in Tuscaloosa, just across from the Home Depot/Target shopping center, and are currently in the planning stages for this new location.


Who we've served... 

As TTCU grew, we began to acquire more SEGs (Select Employee Groups) to include employees of the Tuscaloosa County school system, Shelton State (the former technical schools), Stillman College, Tuscaloosa area private schools, the Hale County school system, Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation, the Pickens County school system, and others.  


In 2002, we obtained a community charter which opened our membership to all of Tuscaloosa county as well as five additional surrounding counties - Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, and Pickens.


What we do... 

In addition to providing financial services, we also have a strong history of community involvement.  We continue to offer generous support to the school systems in our area as well as our college scholarship program each year for high school seniors.  Through the support of our fantastic members, we have been strongly involved in community projects such as the Tuscaloosa County Relay for Life (to benefit our local chapter of the American Cancer Society) and made significant contributions to the West Alabama Food Bank.  And, the members of our staff show their commitment to the community with our own "Casual for Christmas" employee project.  Each year we partner with a school in our area to identify students in need and provide them with clothing, toys, and other items at Christmas.  You will see our employees going casual in their jeans on one designated day each month for a donation to this fund.


Today, we are proud to continue to serve school system employees and others members of the community throughout our credit union charter.  We offer just about all of the products and services for individual consumers that other larger financials do, but we continue to provide the "down home" feel of a smaller institution that knows you by name and is always there to help.   Here at TTCU, we would love the opportunity to serve you.           


Membership Information


Those who live, work, worship, or attend school in Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Pickens, or Tuscaloosa counties are eligible to enjoy all of the benefits of TTCU.  A $25 minimum balance in savings is required for membership.
